A woman with long, wavy hair gazes out over the ocean at sunset, with a crescent moon and starry sky in the background. Overlaid text reads 'In Between Girl' and 'I'm not who I was, but I'm not who I'll be.' The bottom right corner features the name 'Niki Phoenix'.

There are seasons in life when we no longer fit the person we used to be, but we haven't yet become the person we're meant to be.

In Between Girl was one of the very first songs I ever wrote, and it arrived in a way I'll never forget.

I was dreaming the song.

I could hear the melody and the lyrics as if it were already playing somewhere beyond me. When I woke up, I grabbed a notebook and wrote down everything I could remember before it disappeared. Unlike songs that take days or weeks to shape, this one seemed to arrive almost complete.

At the time, I was living through one of the most difficult chapters of my life. I felt suspended between the life I had known and a future I couldn't yet see. Nothing felt certain, and I wasn't sure where I belonged anymore.

Looking back, I realize the song understood what I couldn't yet put into words. In Between Girl became more than just a song—it became a companion through that season. It reminded me that transition isn't failure. It's the space where we slowly become the person we've been growing toward all along.

Today, when I listen to it, I'm reminded that the "in between" was never my destination. It was the bridge that carried me home to myself.
